What if starting a regular sketchbook practice was the easiest way to get yourself creating again?

What if your sketchbook could be a place to play instead of a place to make perfect art?

Sketchbook Playground is a free mini class designed to help you loosen up, experiment, and get out of your head and into the process of making.

Through three simple prompts, you’ll:

  • Explore shape, color + mark using acrylic paint and mixed media

  • Make a series of playful sketchbook experiments

  • Discover how much can happen when you start without a plan and follow what catches your attention

You don’t need more rules. You need a place to play.

So grab your sketchbook, pull out your paints, and come experiment with me. There’s no finished masterpiece you need to create and no right way to do it.

Just three simple words: Shape. Color. Mark.

Sketchbook Playground is for you if…

  • You want to loosen up and have more fun with your art.

  • You tend to overthink what to make before you ever pick up a brush.

  • Your sketchbook feels more like a place to make “good art” than a place to experiment.

  • You want an easy, low-pressure way to start making without needing a plan.

  • You’re curious about intuitive abstract painting, but don’t know where to begin.

  • You want to play with shape, color + mark without worrying about whether everything works.

  • You find yourself getting stuck trying to make every page look finished or perfect.

  • You want to experiment with acrylic paint and mixed media without needing complicated techniques.

  • You’re looking for simple prompts that get you out of your head and into the making.

  • You want your sketchbook to become a place for ideas, experiments, happy accidents + discovery.

  • Most of all, you want to play more and overthink less.

And yes, beginners are absolutely welcome.

You do not need any previous painting or drawing experience. You don’t need to know how to paint, understand composition, or have a particular style. You don’t even need to think of yourself as an “artist.”

We’re keeping it simple. You’ll explore three easy prompts: Shape. Color. Mark.

That’s it.

Bring your sketchbook, some paint, your curiosity, and a willingness to see what happens.

There’s no right way to do this. Just start playing.

Recommended supplies

Keep it simple. Use what you have.

You do not need a giant collection of art supplies to take this class. In fact, I’d love for you to resist the urge to go shopping and instead go on a little art-supply scavenger hunt through your studio.

Look for the colors you’re drawn to. Dig out those weird supplies you bought and never used. Grab the brushes you already love. Make this yours.

Optional supplies to play with

  • Mixed media supplies: Neocolor II crayons, colored pencils, Stabilo Woody crayons

  • Mark-making tools: old credit cards, palette knives, silicone shapers, or whatever interesting tools you can find around your house or at the hardware store

  • Craft heat gun or blow dryer for speeding up drying time

Basic supplies

  • Watercolor or mixed media paper

  • Acrylic paint in whatever colors you love

  • A few paintbrushes in different sizes

There are no special tools required. Part of the fun is seeing what you already have and getting curious about what else could make an interesting mark.

Inside the class, I’ll walk you through the supplies in a detailed video and provide a downloadable supply list with links for anything you might want to add to your studio.

Use what you have. Follow your curiosity. Make a mess.

Your Guide FOR THIS CREATIVE JOURNEY

Hi! I’m Becky, and I’m So Glad you’re here

I’m an intuitive painter, creative catalyst, and recovering perfectionist.

I believe a sketchbook can be one of the most useful tools for getting yourself back into a creative practice.

It doesn’t have to be precious. It doesn’t have to be beautiful. And you definitely don’t have to know what you’re going to make before you open it.

Sometimes you just need a place to start.

A place to try a color. Make a weird shape. Follow a line. Cover something up. See what happens.

That’s how I use my sketchbook and that’s exactly why I created Sketchbook Playground.

A simple, playful way to get your hands moving, quiet the overthinking, and start making again.
